Where Are Your Title Deeds ?

I'm interested as mine are in the house as recently paid mortgage off and I'm not sure if they should be to be honest . There's a lot of old documents in them and I'm feeling a bit uncomfortable .

The deeds to my house are in the filing cabinet right next to where I'm sitting now. However they're nothing more than historical documents, as it's what's on the records at the Land Registry that's important. (i.e. I could set fire to the deeds if I wanted to. They no longer serve any real purpose).

If you're recently paid off your mortgage I STRONGLY recommend that you check the title register to ensure that your mortgage lender has lifted the charge against your house. Over a decade after paying off my mortgage I tried to sell part of my garden to a neighbour, only to find that the Land Registry records still showed that the Woolwich Building Society had a charge on my property. (Another AB member has reported a similar problem). As the Woolwich Building Society didn't even exist by then (it had been taken over by Barclays Bank),
I had loads of trouble getting things sorted out.

How interesting Buenchico . I did wonder if the deeds would still be it Virgins name ( previously NR ) and they are . I did feel unsettled by receiving them but had no clue what do do . I'll do something now though . Cheers for pointing me I the right direction .

It was me who had the problem. The historical paperwork which dates from the late 80’s is up in the attic somewhere. The Land Registry stuff is on this computer plus on two separate back ups plus (of course) on the Land Registry server.

we paid cash for this house and only have a registry extract copy in the house for interest... solicitor has the deeds but as has been said it's all on public record..

Mine ? Actually I'm unsure. In among the "important papers" filed away I guess. My late parents' house deeds are still with the bank it was lodged with when they were still around. I keep meaning, in a half hearted way, to go retrieve them, but as I am no longer living local to the bank I never seem to get around to it. Anyway, isn't it all electronic data now, and the paper deeds less meaningful ?

murray, what “deeds” has your solicitor got and is he charging you for storage?

I can’t remember the sale cut off date but houses sold after that date are now registered with the Land Registry online and provided there are no discrepancies eg boundaries, then the Land Registry info is the “real” house deed and previous paperwork has no direct legal standing as I recall.

Mine are also in the filing cabinet. The mortgage company sent them to me long before the mortgage was settled as it is too expensive for them to store them and is already stated, they are of no value these days.
I have checked the Land Registry records on line to make sure they are accurate.
