OK, I see I must spell it out.

If money is going to frivolous claims (plus the courts costs investigation costs etc) then less for bobbies on the beat.

I suspect most brave coppers would like to be bitten by a flea rather than some scumbag.

it's not very clear from the report what's actually going on. Did this case go to trial? I find it rather hard to believe a competent barrister wouldn't have had it laughed out of court. Also, who actually pays the damages? There's a reference to "the taxpayer" rather than the ratepayer; but maybe it's an insurance company?

For what it's worth, £12,000 for a flea bite does sound ridiculous; but some of the other compensated incidents may for all I know have caused serious damage.

I wouldn't mind seeing a proper analysis of all this rather than a Mail rant that omits a lot of facts.

It doesn't say if the flea bit led onto further medical problems. Maybe allergy or infection - the Daily Mail are experts when it comes to missing out information

In the headline case the flea bite resulted in emergency surgery, I have no idea why of course.

On the broader issue, frivolous claims do no good to any organisation.

During my 23 years service as a police officer I cannot remember one any fellow member being compensated for any injury received in the line of duty.Maybe we a bit tougher in those days.
