I've been avoiding this for weeks but we still seem to be nowhere near any sort of solution to this so any ideas how we can make it work?

One - keep the trade customs in place, that's a win-win for both sets of exporters and importers and then it allows free movement of goods with minimal checks and minimal fees.
Two - let the Irish and EU folk coming over the border into Northern Ireland. Put hard borders in at the airports and ports in Belfast etc and at British incoming/outgoing ports for people and not the goods - could be like the States to Canada, where the two customs are only yards apart (and as Ireland and the States practice in Dublin).
