Money from US to UK or vice versa

Does anyone know a good way of transferring money between an account in US and mine ... my bank will do it but always charges quite a hefty commission ....

paypal (the e-bay payment system) is one way - it can be used for anything, not just e-bay payments.

Also http://www.auctionpix.co.uk/misc/money.html will change $US checks at reasonable rates.
