If every one of our species is wandering about as spirits, or whatever, we would be knee deep with them Preposterous notion that we live on after death, in memories certainly, that's all.

People believe in the bible or equivalent and life after death because they want to believe it, they cannot accept that when we die we are no more. It is a form of selfish arrogance that says "I'm so important that I must live on after death but others who think differently to me will perish". We are not that important, we will all perish.
