Why do lots of the youtube combination clips I watch (things like funny cats, funny dogs etc) often have the view split into 3 vertical panels with the central one showing the clip and a panel either side all fuzzy?

I've pinched this... //It's actually quite simple: Most people shoot video with their cell phones in a vertical orientation. When you display that on a TV screen it leaves the sides black. So TV stations and networks fill in the black space with blurry, and sometimes magnified, versions of the original video just so parts of the screen aren't blank. This is...
