Antidepressants, as the name suggests, help in relieving depressive symptoms. They are usually prescribed for unipolar depression (no evidence of bipolarity as judged by the psychiatrist). Mood stabilizers on the other hand help in stabilizing mood fluctuations in bipolar patients. I am on antidepressants for PTSD along with Ambien as a mood elevator.
