Scrapbooking

I wasn't sure which category to put this in, but here seems as good as any.

I want to have a go at scrapbooking. I have a 'nostalgia' themed starter kit that I'd like to use to present some very old family photos as a gift for mum-in-law. Then I'd like to go on and have go at something with my own photos.

Only thing is, I haven't a clue where to start. There's so much stuff available and so many design ideas. What should I spend my money on to start with? Also, any good beginner books I could get?

I haven't started scrapping yet, but as a cardmaker I see lots of links etc with scrapping in mind. I would tend to choose papers and embellishments that would either tone or contrast with the pictures. There are loads of scrapbooking magazines out there which might be a bit cheaper than a book, try Google as well for ideas. When you have finally got all your papers etc, (make sure it is acid and lignin free) this link might give you a good idea of how to do a layout (LO) on scrapbooking sites. http://pagemaps.com/index.htm. there is a really good scrapbooking book called: the complete book of creative scrapbooking

I bought this is Sussex Stationers (UK) and I really like it. It is packed full of really creative ideas.

I would say, as far as equipment is concerned, is to decide on your layout first and then purchase the equipment. In my basic box, I have the obvious, glues (prit stick and pva) and some decorative scissors inc pinking shears and lots of ribbons, raffia buttons etc etc. I'm a bit of a magpie and collect all sorts of shiny things and natural stuff to decorate scrap book pages with. Once you get into it, you'll see the whole world in a complete new light and everything you come across you'll think layout with and pocket it!!!!!

Materials that I really like working with are natural ones, twigs, sand, shells, stones, grasses, pressed fleurs etc etc....The key is to just have fun.

There are also some really good examples of people's work on the website www.sizzix.com and look under the album pages. There are loads in other places on the net too which I'm sure you've googled already.
p.s i do have a sizzix machine now (a 30th birthday pressie) and I love it. It is well worth it if you get into scrapbooking.

Unfortunately the link doesn't work, Jules, but I have found a number of interesting looking sites.

I think what I'll do is start with one photo/page and then see how it goes. I like the idea of using natural materials, and since my hubby's a magpie too (he makes quirky earrings!) then I'll go raid his collection to start with.
