Two particularly cryptic clues: 22d "The Beeb beginning to be put out for free" (U-T--) and 27a "Disheartened soldier is back" (---R). The 5th letter of 22d is the 2nd letter of 27a. I think 22d must be UNTIE (meaning "free") giving -E-R for 27a, which could then be REAR (meaning "back"). But I can't see the word play for either clue. Any help please?
