...cut sections out of an mp3 and save to a file (wav preferably, ready to cut to CDA). suggestions of freeware software or a 'how to' response using windows media player/winamp or sound recorder would be gratefully receieved. Any freeware must not come with a 'degree in sound recording' pre-requisite.

i'm going to answer my own question with a big "duh!" - have downloaded a freeware mp3 -> wav converter and will then use windows' "sound recorder" to chop the start and end to leave the bit i want. simple wannit?

Or use Cool Mp3 Splitter....there are a few good audio manipulation tools out there.

Winamp can convert mp3 to wav as well. And you can get a free trial of Soundforge which I found to be a good tool for editing wavs. By the way, didn't I promise you a recording some months back? Well I finally found the disc a couple of weeks back, so if you still want it let me know.

Some crackles and distortion, but it is a very old record - 1964- and one of the first I ever bought, so probably got played a lot on antique equipment!
