Recently there was a huge fire at a council dump, the cause was thought to be from aerosols being put in general rubbish and not recycled. What do we do with half full aerosols that no longer spray and perfume spray bottles that will not spray. Should they still go in recycling. Also nail varnish bottles with some contents. Councils do not make it plain what to do with certain articles.

If it isn't on your Council's website contact them and ask.
Email the council as different councils have different rules.

Or take them to the tip if you can.
Once upon a time we didn't have recycling and yet I don't recall regular huge fires from old aerosols. I suspect the dump staff aren't taking sufficient care.

Trouble with taking things personally to the tip is the inefficiency. Hundreds of folk taking time out to drive, using up fuel and adding to traffic, when the regular cart could be taking it.
If in doubt, chuck it in the recycling bin. The people sorting it will know what to do.
regarding my recycled paper i suspect that it's sorted, pulped, reprinted and shoved back through my door as junk mail
