Worst result for her party since 1949, looks like the Germans have had enough of Mrs Merkel's open door policy. Only 33% of the Vote, a much worse percentage than TM managed, I guess she's going to have to do a deal to stop the rise of the FDP.

Ymb,
For the last 4 years Merkel has been in coalition with the Socialists. That partnership is broken by this election result, so the Socialists are now in opposition. If anything, without the leftist Socialists, that strengthens Merkel's ability to move her Government more to the centre.
//Mrs Merkel is also alleged to have been a propaganda secretary for the youth movement, the FDJ. //

Nice piture in uniform here:

1 Germany's Social Democrats are not really socialists.
2 Angela Merkel is widely regarded by many SPD people as the best leader they never had.
3 Germany always has coalition governments
4 It is sad to see the rise of a party which thinks Germans should be proud of the German army's actions in 2 world wars. It is precisely Germany's coming to terms with the evils of its old regimes that has made it the power it is today
5 The AFD won 13% of the vote, which is a lot for it, and 90 seats, so well done it, but compared to the 48% of Remain voters in the UK (whom many here would prefer to ignore) and several hundred originally pro-Remain MPs, it is small. And even smaller compared to the vast majority of Germans who are not of that mind. Germany overall still overwhelmingly rejected the politics of division, even if that voice will sadly now have a voice in parliament.
The reaction of the Russian government to the German result is interesting. They seem to love the AFD, curiously, yet deplore "fascism" in Ukraine, with its zero number of far right MPs.
Perhaps they only celebrate success :-)
// The CDU applying the principles of Christian democracy and emphasising the "Christian understanding of humans and their responsibility toward God." CDU membership consists however of people adhering to a variety of religions as well as non-religious individuals. The CDU's policies derive from political Catholicism, Catholic social teaching and political Protestantism, as well as fiscal conservatism and national conservatism. //

Christian understanding? Conservatism?

It's almost beyond parody. As are some of the clowns on here.
Don't think AFD getting nearly 13 per cent of the vote is so terrible. It sends a message to Merkel et al that uncontrolled immigration is not in Germany's best interests.
Vetuste: 'The CDU's policies dervive from political Catholicism AND political protestantism'? Wow, they must be really clever.
//Germany overall still overwhelmingly rejected the politics of division, even if that voice will sadly now have a voice in parliament. //

13% didnt, and they will now have that proportional voice. That is democracy for you, dont you like it?
"13% didnt, and they will now have that proportional voice. That is democracy for you, dont you like it? "

As I explained: well done to them for their small success, and they deserve their place as a proportionate reflection of their vote, but that does not mean that it is a matter of severe regret that they achieved that small success. Merely blaming Angela Merkel for it is not enough. They are a party with obnoxious racist views and sadly they are using people's genuine concerns over immigration for their own ends. Most won't care about their other "policies", but they should
Isn't there another way of interpreting these results, in that 97% of German voters didn't for the far right AfD ?
'No' would have been simpler, Ichikeria.
Did Diane Abbot pass you that gem, Mikey?
Now that was a typo !....87% of course !
Isn't there another way of interpreting these results, in that 74% of voters didn't vote for Angela Merkel's party.
Wash your mouth out Talbot!
it would seem the AFD is imploding. Wonderful how the success of an election does that.

Isn't Frau Merkel now having to build bridges with other parties - obviously not with the AFD

With any luck, she'll be busy for a month or so doing that and keeping her neb out of Brexit.
