If by 'they' you mean extremists, then yes of course they think they move closer to their goal, that's why they do this sort of thing.

But if you are confusing one unbalanced terrorist child abuser with the vast majority of peaceful followers of Islam, then they have nothing to do with this abhorrent behaviour, it represents nothing they understand as being part of their faith.
