I need a little encouragement!  I've been dieting and losing about 2lbs a week - 9lbs so far - but although I am still at it and not cheating, I seem to have come to a grinding halt.  No weight loss last week and only 1lb this.  Is this a normal plateau and will the fat start melting away again - or have I got to eat only one lettuce leaf and an orange segment a day to start the scales' descent once more?  As you will see, my name says it all!

firstly congratulations on your weight loss so far. You sound like you are being sensible and only losing 1-2lbs a week as advised. Depending on how much weight you have to lose, there will be times when the weight loss slows done, don't give up I know it is demoralising, keep doing what you are doing, don't cut down on what you have been eating so far, as it will make your body think it's in starvation mode and try to hang onto the weight even more. Well done and hope this helps

After the initial 'shock' to the system, the body will eventually get used to the idea of losing excess weight and start adjusting the balance between fat and muscle itself.  After about 8 weeks, the weight will be harder to shift, but if you keep up the good work you will achieve your aim.  The only real encouragement I can give, is that if you stop now, then all that initial effort would have been wasted as you would have to start again.  Well done & good luck, but mainly - keep it up!

Do you exercise as well as this may also help  along with your dieting  your doing really well so far and this usually happens but don't give up and don't starve yourself!

Well done, Pud. My advise would be, eat grapefruit a couple of times a day - it's diuretic, don't eat any carbs after 5pm cos you wont use them for energy and they'll be stored as fat, if you eat table salt change to sea salt, swap white bread and white rice for brown (white rice is heinous anyway, it bloats you big time), everywhere you walk, keep your tummy muscles tight and your bum tucked in - you'll be suprised - you can even do the tummy bit when sitting down, it'll help tone you up. Lastly, if you really want a cake/choc/pkt crisps for goodness sakes have it, otherwise you'll just end up rebelling against the whole thing and it will all be for nothing. Just do a bit more exercise the next day. I lost 3 stone two years ago and the weight has stayed off. Good luck xxx

Thanks all of you.  I am doing all this obviously to look even lovlier than I do already -  and because I have arthritis in my knees and getting a couple of stone off would make a big difference to this.  However, sore knees make brisk walking thoroughly painful and after several minutes I have to stop.  I have been rebounding like mad (can't begin to describe how awful the wobbling bits look when you do this) but even that causes some real pain.  Short of press ups - and no, I really don't think I can manage them - I can't think what else to do.

SWIM Mrs Pudding!

Easy on the joints. Great for toning up. Great form of cardiovascular exercise.

Do it 2 or 3 times a week if you can to get it into your system... and watch the fat melt away!

Oh God, I know you're right.  How I hate physical exercise - specially swimming (so wet and I look soooo awful in a cozzy) - and cycling sounds like he11!  But I will try.

Hi mrs.pudding I lost 5 stone on a sensible WW diet plus I used to be borderline anorexic as a teenager so I have loads of dieting experience. What I learned when on the WW plan is that losing about 2Lb a week really does mean it stays off. When I used to hit a plateau I found it so upsetting but what used to happen is that you get a few weeks where not much happens and then suddenly (usually when you're on the verge of a chocolate binge) it starts coming off at the same rate again. What I learned from my teenage years is that it really is true that if you crash diet you lose weight very fast but the instant you start eating normally it piles back on depressingly fast and your metabolism is messed up for a long time.

I'm not saying it has to be the WW diet but any sensible plan will do! Stick with it and the weight will come off quicker than you think and stay off :-)

I think that secretspirit is a woman (?) after my own heart.  Then again, ansteyg has definitely sussed me out!  But I have been looking at exercise bikes on the internet since the suggestion was posted.  Do you think toned muscles and a lithe and beautiful body are really possible at nearly 60?  I shall now have to post a question as to which is the best of the cheaper bikes to go for!
obviously having lost weight you now need less cals than previously, this combined with the reduction in metabolism will cause possible plateaus in weight loss. Dont be afraid once a week say to have a meal quite high in fat etc as not only does it keep you sane it also helps boost your metabolism. You should aim to carry on dropping cals by a hundred a day until you see renewed fat loss or you take up some form of exs to aid your expenditure.
Yes, I am a woman mrs.pudding! And if you can use an exercise bike at nearly 60 you're an inspiration to me. I'm 24 and I think I would die if I got on one but I do walk a lot.

Well done on getting the weight off.

I've started a weight loss plan called Lighterlife which after 24 years of yo-yo dieting, I've managed to lose 5 stone in 20 weeks. If you've got 3 stone or more to shift this could be the fast way to get rid of your 'excess baggage'. If you want to find out more check out their website www.lighterlife.co.uk for your local group/counsellor.

It's not cheap at 45 per week but it provides all your food packs, you don't need to shop for other foods, you're not weighed in front of others, the group is led by a counsellor and the results are fantastic- they guarantee you losing a stone a month!

In my first 4 weeks I lost 26lb - puts Weightwatchers in the shade eh?

Whatever you do though, best of luck as I know it's tough.

My dear, mrs. Pudding! I belive that you are a woman of a strong will, that's why I know for sure that you can do this, you can lose as much weight as you want. I wish you good luck. Just be self confident and you will achive your goal. Also, I hope this tips can help you http://1loseweightfast.com/
