I'm reminded of the time that the rail station I worked at was filled with people dressed as spacemen. I made a station announcement apologising for the fact that, due to scheduled engineering work on the space-time continuum, there would be a replacement bus service between Alpha Centauri and the Andromeda galaxy ;-)

I am so glad that I live a long, long way from London. Not many years ago we stayed for a couple of days with MrJ2's daughter in N.. London. We had to go by the Tube one day..........it was almost as bad as the New York underground. You Londoners are welcome to it, quite frankly.

It could have been worse, J2. You should try working at a London Underground station. The bureaucracy is ridiculous. I've worked, on behalf on the Dockland Light Railway, asking commuters questions at Bank Station. Before anyone can start work there though, here's what they have to do:

1. Take a train to Poplar station.
2. Walk up the road to the DLR HQ.
3. Sign in at the security hut.
4. Walk to the duty supervisor's office and sign in to work for DLR.
5. Return to the security hut and sign out from the HQ.
6. Walk back to Poplar station.
7. Take a train back to Bank station.
8. Take the escalator link to Monument station.
9. Find the TfL supervisor's office and sign in to work on TfL property.
10. Take the escalator back to Bank station.
11. Find the platform supervisor's office and sign in to work on his platform.

Dead easy, eh?

I travel on the Tube a lot whenever I go into town, avoiding the worst of the rush hours, and I've had very little trouble. Two lines currently run every two minutes or less and more are planned to follow, which means not too much crowding and fast, frquent journeys.

I suppose I'd skip No Pants Day, though, a bit nippy that time of year

The personal hygiene of most Londoners seems to be a lot better than that of many Parisian men!

^The NY Metro looks like an unfinished tunnel which is populated by crackheads and weirdos. Last time I was there, I bought a travel card and couldn`t understand why it wouldn`t let me go through the automatic barrier. Turns out, the woman on the ticket desk pocketed most of my money. Please don`t knock the London underground because I don`t think you know what you are talking about

Buen - last time we were on the Paris Metro we both caught bird 'flu and were ill for weeks and weeks. Avoid at all costs....

I love the tube so easy to get around town even if you have to take a short cab ride at the end
