Benefits for elderly mum

Where do I start in trying to see if my elderly mum is eligable for attendance allowance or any other types of benefits. She is not very mobile and I think that she needs some help around the house. She is in hospital at the moment with a thrombosis in her leg. she is 74. Thanks in advance

Try Social Services first. They will be able to tell you what benefits, if any, she can claim.

If you spend a certain amount of time caring for her you may be eligible for carer's allowance too and it is not means- tested (unless you work full time)

When your mum comes out of hospital telephone The Pension Service 0845 60 60 265 and ask to be put through to the Local Pension Service. You will be able to arrange for a member of staff to come and visit your mum in her own home to discuss every possible benefit she would be entitled to and complete any application forms.
You could be there too and Carers Allowance could also be considered.

Only too pleased to help. The Pension Service ( DWP) can help with the benefits but if you think she needs aids in the house call your local council and ask for the Aids and Adaptations department. The will offer advice and maybe fit handrails etc.

Go the Age Concern website. www.ageconcern.co.uk

On the top right hand side of the site there is Search Box called Key Issues (or something similar). Select "Fact Sheets" and "Go".

You will then find a list of Fact Sheets which you can download on a whole variety of Age-related topics money-related topics, including Disability and Attendance Allowance. These fact sheets will provide you with a lot of helpful information about who to contact, and what the benefits are.
