tv detective drama a young girl is killed in a boating shed and the family of a young man with learning difficulties spend years protecting him but it turns out it was actually his father who had committed the crime......I think.

Sounds like a Midsomer Murders plot although something at the back of my mind says Lewis.

I can see the mother, she didn't answer the door when the detective called......she believed her son had killed the little girl and was protecting him. I think the lad kept birds?

It was a Morse, it was an old case, Painter I think was accused and jailed for it, an ex colleague was writing his memoirs and was murdered. Turned out to have been one of his former colleagues who had killed the suspected killer because he was the girl's father from an old affair. All hinged on a delegates badge from a conference. Called Second Tine Around according to Wiki.
