Being Around Someone On Chemotherapy Whilst You've Got A Cold.

we are due to spend most of the weekend at a friends house who is currently having chemotherapy this weekend but my husband has had symptoms of a mild cold for the last 2-3 days. Is it best for us to stay away?
I've asked my friend and he said not to worry about him and to come anyway but I would feel awful if he became poorly . He is due to have his 4th round of treatment today and it's making him feel gradually worse everytime anyway. :(
My husband is still keen to go as he wants to get a major DIY job done for them so I feel like I need to make the decision.

nooooo... must not expose anyone on chemo to ANY infection !

chemo wipes out any resistance to infection and can be very dangerous.... so it would really be best to postpone any DIY untill your friend has finished chemo and is stronger

My sympathy for your friend. I know what he is going through.

Visiting while having a cold is not ideal. The DIY job will still be there when he's shaken it off.

Having had chemotherapy myself, I do know a bit about it. On no account should anyone with symptoms of a cold or virus come anywhere near you. My immune system was rock bottom and I could have caught anything, which obviously is very serious in these circumstances. Also, if I did catch something, then my chemotherapy would not be given. It was a while back now, but I do know I had to miss Christmas with friends because one of them had a cold. Good luck to your friend with her treatment.

concur with riptide... dad had to be kept in a strictly sterile environment..be good friends and DON'T go....

I agree too. Vera went through it twice. The slightest hint of a cold in visitors barred them.

I wouldn't go around, I too have had chemo and none of my siblings could be near me if they or they're babies at the time had any sign of a cold or infection

thanks everyone . i think my husband thought i was being overly cautious and I think my friend was being too polite to say no.I feel much better for keeping away .

If a patient is immuno-compromised, something like the common cold can literally be the end of them.
