I've bought an expensive telescope and fancy going to Kielder Forest with it but I don't just want to turn up and start using it on somebodys' land. Is it possible to just turn up with your own scope and start viewing? Do they have any special areas for people to use with their own equipment? Viewing from Manchester isn't really recommended. Too much light pollution. Could always try Saddleworth Moor though. Thanks.

I Live in Northumberland and though I’ve never been, there is an astronomer’s centre that is open to the public.
I don’t know if you have to book a place etc. but it is situated in the heart of the forest. I’m sure if you Google it, the info will be there.

Good luck stargazing.

^^^ Kielder Observatory (which I think Chrissa1 is referring to) can only be visited for specific events. See here:
https://www.kielderobservatory.org/visiting

There are also other events in the area, such as Kielder Forest Star Camp:

The secretary of the Kielder Observatory Astronomical Society might be able to advise you about casual visits to the area:

I believe you’re a resident of Manchester 10c?

Dentdale is supposed to be one of the best star watching spots, just up the M6and turn right.

I remember going there years ago to watch the RAC Rally. At 2am, in late November, you can look up and see the whole sky covered in stars.
