tv has blown

My new flatmate switched on the tv and heard a pop and now it won't switch on. Does anyone know if it can be fixed and if so, how much it will cost?

I'm really skint and reluctant to buy a new tv, prefering to have it mended as it has a 40" screen.

It is impossible to answer. You need a quote from a tv engineer who can look at it.

The cost of replacement parts vary according to the model, you haven't even said if it is a crt or plasma.

Here's a tip though if you're really skint and need a new TV.

There's a lot of people replacing theirs with high definition LCD or plasma boxes these days and taking their old ones to the dump.

Certainly where I live the guys at the tip have a nice little stock of perfectly fine TVs which they'll sell you for a fiver or so.

I would check the fuse first. Our TV made a noice a while ago and wouldnt switch on we later realised it was just a blown fuse.

I�ve had this happen a few times and as Dellgirl says, check the fuse first - probably wont be the one in the plug.

If you�re competent enough then whip the back off and if you follow where the power cable goes then somewhere within close proximity to where it �connects� inside you�ll see a small clear fuse (not a normal household one) which has probably blown. You need to buy these from a TV repair shop (c.35p)

If in ANY doubt about your ability call the in pros though, and obviously make sure it�s unplugged before attempting anything!!

If you heard a pop I'd be surprised if it was the fuse.

Please be very wary about taking the back off of a TV. Especilly one with a tube (rather than say a LCD) there are some mighty big voltages in there and capacitors that hold charge even after the set is switched off.
