According to the BBC News report hi excuse was that he grabbed the bottle off two men who he believed were about to spike a girl’s drink.
That sounds like something he concocted after the event.
As to sentences upon conviction?
I think it should be classed as GBH, category 1 (as detailed in the link below).
Cat 1 is “Greater harm (serious injury must normally be present) and higher culpability”.
The starting point upon conviction is 12 years.
I would be more than happy with that. The reason why I think these attacks should carry such heavy sentences, is that the perpetrator is attempting to inflict life changing injuries to the victim(s). They want to cause lifelong misery. This is different to someone being convicted of GBH when they punch someone in the face during a pub brawl (for example).
