Anybody ever managed to get a hotel room upgrade and how did you manage it?? Am in mischevious mood and have found email address of the Manager at the hotel in New Hork that we are staying at. What would you cheekily write to try and get your room upgraded??
P.S this is all in fun, I’m perfectly happy with what I’ve booked - I’m just curious as to who’s ever succeeded and how.

You have to fawningly flatter them, or lie and say it’s your anniversary or something.

Where you staying?
Say it will be your 25th/50th Wedding Anniversary (whichever is more likely!)
very simple, Smow, 'if you don't ask, you don't get.'

I never book Trivago etc, I call up the hotel direct and ask them what they can do for mem (they are avoiding having to pay commission!).

Same with the airlines too.

Staying at The Sanctuary, Times Square New York.
Cool. Did you book the helicopter trip?
We've had upgrades at places we've stayed a couple of time before without being asked. When it was our silver wedding, really was too, our daughter rang the airline and they put us into business class. We're off to Key West next year so a couple of weeks ago I emailed one of the hotels to ask about the situation after the hurricane, we would be very disappointed to miss that part of the trip as we were so looking forward to it, might get an upgrade there. Good luck, as has been said contact the hotel directly to get a better price than the sites, often works, look for about 5%.

I’m going to book the helicopter trip tomorro if I can but it’s only on certain dates
I got an upgrade because the room we were given was too for from the restaurant etc. and the view out of the window was a brick wall.We were quickly moved to a room at the front about ten paces from the lift and with a sea view.
Too for? duh! too far!
Get your daughter/son to write saying it is your anniversary or birthday or recovery celebration or something and say it is a special occasion so please can they make it extra special.

We were quickly moved to a room at the front about ten paces from the lift and with a sea view’

Which, considering it was in Birmingham was remarkable.

;-)
We have been upgraded loads of times - always because of a legitimate complaint about the accommodation we were offered when we had seen it / spent a night in it.

If you approach management in the correct way - you love the hotel, want to come back, and so on, they are often keen to keep you happy by upgrading if they can. It's good PR for them.
Nothing wrong with buttering them up a bit but I wouldn't lie about birthdays, anniversaries etc. They have heard it all before.

Well I’ve emailed the GM and I haven’t lied so we shall see lol
Say or hint that you work for American Express.

Why? Lol
Amex is one of the biggest buyers of hotel rooms via their travel bureaux which take care of the travel arrangements of very many firms around the world. I believe they have several offices in the UK doing just that.
