The Queen thought it was her 70th wedding anniversary, but apparently she was mistaken...according to the BBC and Emily Maitlis she was married in 1937, with the Spanish Civil war raging and Chamberlain in Munich. (tonight's Newsnight) I couldn't believe my ears so I rechecked it on iPlayer.
I can understand the baby journo's and producers dropping a clanger like this, but the experienced Emily? perhaps she had an ulterior motive...

slips of the tongue do happen especially on live broadcasts, just as in ordinary live conversation. Only recently we were assured there were no unemployed in Britain.

Actual news broadcasts, as opposed to programmes like Newsnight, tend to be more carefully scripted and checked.

It was a proper piece with film and she read it off the autocue, twice stating that the wedding was in 1937 and including the bits about Spain and the Conservative Prime Minister struggling to bring about settlement in Europe, as a parallel to the situation today - somebody had put work and thought into it, but I'm afraid they couldn't subtract 70 from 2017...

I'm surprised that people interested in intelligent analysis would be watching Newsnight. Used to watch it on the days (Monday and Tuesday) when Paxman was presenting the program. Tried again after the Witless and Wark takeover, but only when they conscripted Evan Davies. But he turned out to be even more witless and warky than the women.

I did watch it at one time.
