Why not ask the friend to tell you when the visit will take place and make a suitable choice whether a meal or something less than that ? I agree, mince pies are vile and so is "Christmas cake".

she is coming over this friday so will have a better idea of what time she might be over.. think its likely to be afternoon, as she will want to be with the children in the morning. doubt if she will stay more than an hour.
A mini afternoon tea with fizz?
Question Author
possibly, but i can't manage a full bottle of fizz, even shared out.........
If she's only staying an hour, a glass of something and chocolates, or a cuppa and biscuits will be fine. If I popped in to see someone for an hour and they made a fuss with food and drinks, it would embarrass me.

naomi, think your right, something simple..
Enjoy. :o)
She’d probably be stuffed from Xmas dinner so something midlle of the roady like cheese ham and Branston pickle or sardines on toast
Emmie? Has your friend ever "popped in" before? If so . . what did you offer her by way of refreshment? If not, but she came round on any other day, what would you offer?
I'd go for some nibbles like cheese and biscuits, olives. Maybe get a mini bottle of fizz. It is Christmas, after all.
If morning a glass of bubbles and smoked salmon blinis. Afternoon bubbles and a slice of Christmas cake/stollen.
Whether she calls in before of after her Christmas lunch, she's likey to be politely declining much in the way of food. I suggest you have some small novelty Christmas biscuits in the shape of trees or holly for example, to have with a coffee or tea. Or a glass of something stronger but only something you might have open anyway. Sherry, port maybe?
Not a mention of Stollen?

What's Christmas without it?
Question Author
all very good ideas, some things to think about, don't like Christmas cake, much too heavy on the digestion
