Only given as a suggestion but it starts PYRE (a heap of combustible material, especially one for burning a corpse as part of a funeral ceremony), and its a greyish black garnet, greyish black being a failed big bang?

All a bit tenuous but worth a try perhaps if nobody comes up with anything better. Good luck with it.

I'm sure Cashier is right with the suggestion of 'Jet stream'. Is it possible that the setter has made a mistake with the number of letters? Are you able to check?

It’s theOld Alresford Christmas Quiz in aid of St Mary’s Church, Old Alresford, Hants. closes Jan 8th.
It has 100 clues including a Picture section.
I’ll be posting more clues as I run out of ideas/brains,
