Tips To Help Gauge Parking Space

ive noticed that when i park behind another car at the side of the street, i often leave a gap that to me, seems to be only a few feet of a gap - about average - but then, when i get out of the car, i see i am quite far back - too far - more than necessary. i also did it with my old car - i assume its just the shape of the bonnet seems to look closer to me

any ideas/tips etc that i can use to help me be able to tell?

i even looked at hood ornaments on ebay, but not sure it'd help :D

One trick is to pay attention to what's at the side of you, as well as in front of you.

e.g. as you're about to pull in, look at the gap (and what's beside it) and think "When I come to a halt, I need to be sitting right outside that red gate".

i do sometimes look at my reflection in other cars on the other side of the road, or if theres a large shop window

You can get front detectors fitted that you switch on temporarily to guide you.

Alternatively move forward until you feel a bump, then roll back a foot or two.

How are you on gaps , behind ?

not too bad with behind because its an estate car so the back window is the limit, it seems to be the curve of the bonnet making it seem further - it happened with one other car but not with my first car.

i dont have my seat down low, but i might raise it more anyway and see if that makes any difference

thanks for that link Khandro - im not sure what half of those do - but yes some kind od gadget that i can just stick in my car that warns me would be great
i dont particularly want to have to 'install' something elaborate or have to take it to a garage or pay for anything too expensive.

something even just sits on the dash or behind the mirror or something maybe
