Scratching Dog

My Jack Russel/Beagle mix has been scratching and rubbing himself on anything to the point that he is leaving big sores on his back. He has been checked by a vet who checked for any diseases which may be causing it. There were none. He only does this in the warm months. Any ideas for relieving his stress??

has he had a skin scrape does he run through long grass he may have fox mange he may be alergic to grass this happens in the summer you can try piriton allergy relief tablets

Increase your Omega3 fatty acids in the diet. Do you run an air conditioner during the summer? If so wash your walls and carpet. When was he last dosed for fleas? Most vets will do a skin scrape and check the fur and skin for parasites. Dogs can get seasonal allergies too. You may want to ask your vet about starting some antihistamines. There is a product called Vetacortyl that is an injection from the vet that might help. Your vet may also want to prescribe steriods like Vanectyl-P or Prednisone. It all depends on what it is. I don't understand why your vet didn't start you on something... .

My yorkie does exactly the same during the warm weather - I took him to the vet because I thought it may be excema but she said its an allergy similar to hayfever to humans but dogs get itchy skin and the back end near their tail is the easiest place for them to scratch so they end up with broken excema like skin - Toby is now on piriton from the vet and I came on this site today to ask if piriton you can buy over the counter in the chemist is the same - would it be safe to use? Hope your dog is ok, mine seems to be getting better now piriton is working. xx

yes piriton is safe for dogs i work in aboarding kennels and a terrier comes in on them hope he feels better soon

Hot spots? hot spots are warm painful swollen patch of skin the exudes pus and can smell. the hair is usually lost maybe try a betadine (dilute porvidone-iodine) shampoo. carefully trim the hair away first. It could also be allergies or a skin fungus that would need a special shampoo.
