I received an email this morning supposedly from Gateway Payment Confirmation (HMRC Gov.uk). It begins, "We are processing your request soon........" I haven't made any request. "We have tried to do this automatically but we donot have your credit/debit card details on file". Then it lists a few instructions; have your credit/debit card handy, openthe application in your browser and log in to your Customer Portal account, follow the instructions on your screen. Beneath is a link which they hope i will click on. Then, to make it more official-looking, it lists a few numbers before; Please note; HM Office will never ask for your password or financial information via email.
As i said, i haven't made any request so how are they responding to one. I dare say, there will be one or two caught out by this scam.
Never click on a link of any email. Type it in.

Of course be careful not just to delete mails from HMRC, they are sending out valid reminders if you owe them brass that needs to be paid now.
This one reckons that they owe me, ymf, "up to 245.55 GBP". I'm pretty sure that if they did owe me money, they'd know exactly how much:-/
I've used Gateway and they've never asked for any bank details and certainly none are held on file.
Thanks for letting us know, SD :-)
