How does a long play video work? It is possible to play a LP recorded programme on a normal video but sometimes the quality is affected. But then surely this proves that the tape runs at the same speed?

Help would be appreciated!

The tape does not run at the same speed. If it did, there would be no benefit in using the LP mode. LP mode records at a slower speed, thus the tape lasts longer, and the quality suffers. Most "normal" videos will automatically swicth to LP mode when you insert a tape which was recorded in that mode.

sorry, when i say normal video, i mean a video without a LP or SP facility... (old one!!) it doesn't run sound or pics at half speed which is where the original question comes from... i don't think the tape does run slower? or at least not half speed

It is not possible to play LP videos on a VCR that doesnt support LP.
LP plays at half the speed of SP.

i have played tapes recorded on LP on a vcr that doesn't support it... reduction in quality but it plays otherwise normally.
