Lidl - Baileys lookalikee - "Irish Cream Liqueur" - £6.99

A good friend (small, Irish, redhead) says "It's as good as Baileys and under half the price - what's not to like?". I tried a sip (purely for research purposes) and actually like it more than Baileys - it's got a good sharp kick under the creaminess.


Rude Wines are a new(ish) discovery for me - I bought one of their heavily discounted introductory mixed cases and was impressed enough to order plenty more bottles at their listed price - not had a duffer yet and they seem nice people on the phone too.

Not tried that Primitivo, ubasses - but I do like the grape (and proper red zinfandel too), so I'll keep an eye out for it.

That method is only for the fine stuff, Tony.

For normal plonk I simply lie underneath the barrel, open my mouth and turn the tap on ;-)

Primitivo (a.k.a. Zinfandel) can usually be relied upon to produce decent wines, Dave.

Yes indeed, Chris - my only caveat is that some 'blush zinfandels' (usually from some ghastly factory in Lost Angeles) can be sweet and very nasty - but true reds from Italy or California are usually excellent.

An addition to the list in my OP (forgotten last night) :

Lidl - Blended Malt Whisky "Glen Orchy" - £13.99

I honestly don't know how they do this - a very acceptable vatted malt for much less than you'd pay for some very ordinary 'brand name' grain whiskies.

It's very smooth, no peat or medicinal tastes, and is great as a nightcap (with just a drop of water). Alternatively it's cheap enough to use with mixers (very nice with a drop of ginger beer) and you can still taste the quality. My Irish friend says "makes a nice toddy too" with hot water and a lump of demerara.
