I have a five year old diesel fiat punto and when I asked about changing the cam belt I was told that it had a chain not a cam belt, but in the book there are instructions on when to change the belt, why would it be in the book if the car don't have a belt?

Which book?

Some (most?) cars are supplied with generic handbooks, which cover all models (both petrol and diesel). Perhaps you're reading something which only applies to petrol models?

spath - the difference being belts need changing regularly, chains can see out the life of the car.
If it's a 1.3 it's a chain. How many miles has the engine done?
