The sheer irony of it was that Nixon was already cruising to a crushing defeat of the Democrat, McGovern (he won 49 states to 1) so there was absolutely no need to play dirty tricks at the Democrat HQ.

BTW, Nixon was not impeached. He resigned before the inevitable and was immediately pardoned by his successor, Ford.

I remember watching his resignation broadcast. It was the day after I had returned from the USSR after a month of study. He said, "I am not a quitter," then in the next sentence he quit!
