Ok aqfter struggling to read unless I hold the book 3 feet away I have finally conceded that the old mince pies need some help in that area. I have always had 20/20 vision so this is an entirely new departure for me. I can see fine mostly but close up I can't see detail at all. So do I just go and get some reading glasses off the stand at asda or what?

Two pairs of cheapo glasses then - one to read with and one to sit on.
Just out of interest, since you are into IT I suspect you spend a lot of time at a workscreen, you might find it worth using specs for that as well as reading. You can do the sums as to what strength you need if you suss out what distance you sit from the screen.
In the days when I was employed my employer was happy both to provide me with a regular eye test and supply the specs; if you are self-employed you might be able to set things off against your tax, if you think it's worth it.
