I think dedicated pet owners, even for goldfish, tend to project their human qualitities  and desires on their pets.  Your goldfish don't think about the flakes as boring, only you do.  They are interested only in something to eat.  The flakes are made from those things that fish would naturally eat, so i don't think it's a good idea to feed them other things that you believe are not boring... Good luck!

i think my goldfish would love another choice of food rather than eating the same thing day in day out.  I wouldlike other fish enthusiasts to give me some ideas on what to give them for a interesting diet.

I am sure if you were to eat the same foods everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner you'd be very bored!

you could try live fish food. i.e. worms, and sea monkeys (yes, tropical fish eat these creatures). Not sure about goldfish but ask at your local fish shop. They come in small bag and they are chilled to stop them dying before they reach your tank. (Can be stored in the fridge if necessary) :-)

there are loads of different flavours and types of prepared food for goldfish, go to your local water garden center and look. If you feed stuff like peas, be prepared to do mor e regular water changes or put in a bigger filter system because such stuff does foul the water more.

I had a catfish who liked a piece of cucumber to chew on, so this is from experience

Dear Mowbray,  I hate it when you ask a question and you get a rude or un-necessary comment back.  So what if you want to feed your fish something different..you should be judged for it!!  I think CT and Woofgang have made some good comments.  I have feed my goldfish on live fish food before and they lived it!  Well done for caring!
*meant shouldn't be judged for it*
My goldfish love eating the weed we buy for their tank. Totally disappears in a few days. Yum.

Fish flakes are designed to contain everything the fish need.  However, if you want, you can feed them peas, lettuce, corn, freeze dried shrimps - and something my golfdish like - bloodworm.  Check out your pet shop, they might have more ideas!

You can feed Coldfish the following types of food that I have feed both My tropical Fish & Salt marine Fish

Frozen Brine Shrimp
Frozon Mysis Shrimp
Frozon Blood Worm

All of these need to be defrosted before feeding to the fish (Preferably in Tank Water, Rather Than Tap Water)
Also if you dont have a filter in the tank remove what the fish doesnt eat
All fish shops will have these foods (they also come dried, but my fish dont like these)

My Koi and goldfish, love it when I throw in a couple of slices of wholemeal bread - must be brown wholemeal, not white bread.  White is bad for them.  They behave like a bunch of pyranahs and it is a special treat for them and me.  They also appreciate chopped earthworms or even a bit of the Sunday joint.

Just over this winter, my filter box has been colonised by a bunch of tiny shrimp.  I am delighted that I no longer have to clean out the filter box, as the shrimp have devoured every bit of waste and it is crystal clear.  I have thrown a few in for the fish.  Before I go further, I need to know who these shrimp are and if they are a good thing or bad.  Can anyone help please ?

believe it or not they do like fresh meat!! i dont mean ham or beef (haha) you know the tiny little mite flies that die and are always on windowsills well my goldfish used to love em!!!! Like candy to a baby it was hope that helps ps. dont use them if you kill them with fly spray obviously!!!!. Mandy
