I have read of many who do appeal and succeed though.

I have been a McKenzie friend at two appeals and both were won. The procedure is long winded and stressful however I have to say that on both occasions the panel were very understanding, respectful and nice, and were very happy for me to clarify what the people appealing were trying to convey. Very well worth doing.
OH decided to appeal a PIP award. At the Tribunal the Chairperson suggested she could be worse off if she continued to proceed. OH couldn't understand, because she thought she had a strong claim for a higher award, so she agreed to the Chair's suggestion to adjourn.
OH could only think that the Tribunal were mistaken in the period of time she was under a disability - in other words that she had not met the minimum period of disablement.
At the adjourned Tribunal, there was another worrying moment about the period of disablement and it was suggested she took a few minutes to consider whether to continue. She did, again because she thought her case was sound and that the Tribunal had misunderstood the period of disablement.
Upshot was that she won her case and was awarded the enhanced amount of PIP. As said above, the members of the Tribunal were understanding and respectful, though it was unfortunate that they seemed to have missed the point about the period of her disability. The important thing is to be totally honest about the circumstances of the disability and how it impacts on the various factors in the DWP checklist.

The appeal success rate is about 2/3 rds apparently
I did an old one ( DLA ) - and as above
the tribunal was paced and respectful
and very interested to know what points you / the appellant was making
In the first time - the chmn said
look you arent making sense - take six weeks off
and come back with the claim form
and your points about what are wrong with it
so six weeks later
we met again
and after about thirty mins of me yakking
they say this - but in fact this....
they say that and in fact the other
they say a third thing but the truth is.....
he ssaid Stop ! went into a huddle and said
OK you have won ....
deffo deffo worthwhile

The assessment before the appeal was much more threatening -
" You say you are blind from a secondary taken out of your right orbit"
No I dont - I have a letter from the Eye Hospital about an operation and the pathology report that it is a secondary
"oh"
and I also sent you a copy - but dont worry I printed one out for today in case you have mislaid the first one
"No I have it"
then you know what I am saying is true....
at the debrief I said to carers - we did get "you say you cant see" - and they replied "yeah we all wondered what you would reply about that...."
and good luck
