Strange Speed Bumps

Round our way (NW London) the local council have started putting sleeping policemen (speed bumps) across the ends of side roads, i.e. where a side road meets a more main road, putting them IN the side road right at the very end.

The effect of this is, of course, that traffic speeding down the side road hits the speed bump just before turning left or right into the more main road.

But they already DO slow down! I've lived round here for decades, and never seen a car shooting out of a side road at speed - these are dead right-angle turns, not gradually bends.

Similarly, I suppose they stop cars on the more main road shooting at speed into the side road - again, in 38 years not something I've witnessed.

Any road traffic experts? Or anyone at all - can you offer an explanation for what's going on?

Perhaps there are plans to make the footpaths 'dual use', for both pedestrians and cyclists (if such an arrangement isn't already in place). It's common practice to place speed tables across the end of side roads where cyclists will be crossing, as way of warning drivers of a potential hazard.

Blimey, I do hope note - they're only 'ordinary' width pavements (and pretty manky ones at that). Not really room for any more wheeled traffic on them. Also, the usual suburban mess - trees, lampposts, cctv cabinets, etc. Not a lot of room left. (I cycle, but I do keep to the roads myself!)

The surplus materials left over from not filling potholes needs to be stored somewhere.

Good point, Ryzen, but they actually used a roller on these things - not standard equipment for filling in holes, is it.

Your council obviously isn't as short of money as most.

Perhaps ask the council leader for an explanation.

Just because you have never witnesses something (in 38 years) does not mean it doesn’t happen or is not a problem.

Personally, as a pedestrian, I see cars pulling into sides roads too fast, and as a driver I see cars pulling out into main roads without stopping.
