I am running windows xp, what happens if i compress the hard drive?

I had an old 486 computer running Windows 98 years ago and decided to compress the drive. I think it was running for about 12 hours to compress everything and saved about 10Mb of space. So I uncompressed it all and it took around the same amount of time!!
As the above article says, computers are much faster these days... but hard drive space is also very cheap! Why not go for an extra drive instead? :)
