Recently on TV I saw an ad for a detergent which was voted "Product of the Year 2006".After that I saw at least 2 other ad's showing their products as "Product of the Year 2006".Is this "Product of the Year" just an advertising trick that companies pay ad agencys to advertise their product as ?

Thanks

are you sure it was product of the year 2006 and not 2005 or something similar. because otherwise it would be false advertising wouldnt it?
Maybe it was product of the year in a specific category? for example....Fairy won it for the detergent category, and Head & Shoulders won it for haircare?

I could of course be talking utter twaddle, but it's as good a theory as any!!
Who selects it as such? There are various organisations that can do the selecting, so you can end up with a number of products in the same category, all called 'Product of the Year' (I suspect this happens with 'Car of the Year' too - there seem to be rather a lot of them!)
I guess you have to read the small print to see who's given out the award.
I depends on whose actually giving the award.

Avon feature loads of award winning products. They're all awarded at the Avon Beauty Awards ceremony each year.
I noticed adverts like this too and in the small print saw that there is a web address for www.productoftheyear .co.uk it makes interesting reading.
