It's awful Giz....and no, NJ.....these things shouldn't happen...
Just talked to someone in the states and the bridge was still under construction which is one clue, another clue is after watching the video in where the crane’s carrying the bridge it must have been assembled elsewhere, flatpack style which doesn’t sound as structuraly sound as it being constructed in the orthodox way.
"The bridge was erected on Saturday in just six hours."

Why are we always in so much of a rush these days?

No doubt "lessons will be learned" etc.
Ymb, because it was across a busy freeway? How long would drivers be prepared to have their road restricted or closed just so kids could walk to school more easily?

There's no right answer to that, just balancing conflicting interests.
“Simple really, Corners were cut, cheaper materials used, lazy workmen, workmen pushed to hard to keep to a schedule‘ ”

“I don’t know anything at this stage jules, so I prefer to keep my mouth shut, rather than propose any theories at this juncture.”

“It was built using an accelerated construction process”

that is extraordinary, i hope that those who designed and built the bridge will fall foul of the law, i can see there have been fatalities, its amazing anyone could get out from this mess.
"...and no, NJ.....these things shouldn't happen..."

I didn't say that they should happen. I said that they do.
A local congressman confirms that a stress test was underway at the time of the collapse. "They were trying to see what the bridge would handle, by dropping a load on it," said Congressman Carlos Curbelo (R), confirming on FoxNews that testing was going on at the time of the collapse

in the middle of rush hour ??
“"They were trying to see what the bridge would handle, by dropping a load on it,"

Unbelievable! Wouldn’t a better time had been at night after blocking the road?

Looks like the person/persons/ company who okayed this will be tested on what they can handle, by dropping a load of lawsuits and a triple digit jail sentence on their heads.
johnny go back to birthday book thread please !

If they were testing the bridge at the time of collapse, I would assume that it would be a form of "non destructive testing (NDT)", which does not cause damage. Obviously, in this case, someone has got the maths VERY wrong :(
That doesn't sound feasible. Surely no one is that insane ?
Anyway the figures should be checked by more than one person and multiple levels of safety put in. None of this makes any sense.
This is truly awful for everyone concerned.

There certainly seems to be some confusion over the project, eg -

"When finished, the bridge would have been supported from above, with a tall, off-center tower and cables attached to the walkway. That tower had not yet been installed, and it was unclear what builders were using as temporary supports."

Let's hope the investigation into the tragedy is concluded as speedily as possible & is clear in its findings.
