Jahulaye, yes I have. I have also owned a racing greyhound and worked in a betting shop. I signed the petition because it's about increased welfare for racehorses, not a total ban on the sport or industry.
I worked at a Racing stables as a teenager. And I agree that nobody is more upset by these tragedies than the owners, trainers and staff themselves. The horses love it- you have to see the excitement when they see the horsebox go onto the yard- and they know what it means.
Unfortunately, there will always be disasters in dangerous sports and anything that minimises the risks has to be worth looking at.
Agreed, it would be nice to hear what those who are campaigning for this actually have drafted as how this will work, what powers they'll have and of course the costings (finance is a fact of life).
Jahulaye, I'd start with ensuring the conditions of the race grounds are fit to race on, and moderating the height and breadth of the jumps at races like the Grand National.
There's something wrong when six horses are killed at Cheltenham. There needs to be an independent committee to look at these things.
Yes, I haven't signed it at the moment as I don't know what their intentions are exactly, what they are planning to do or what effects it will have on all the Welfare laws and rules already in place.
“I'd start with ensuring the conditions of the race grounds are fit to race on, and moderating the height and breadth of the jumps at races like the Grand National.“
I see... I would guess that experts check the racetrack before each race to make sure it’s fit for our equine friends and I can only presume that if like you the governing body wanted to lower the jumps and make them shorter and easier thus being no challenge for the horses or the jockey there would be an uproar and this will end up going abroad where there aren’t any restrictions taking all of the money with which is why I don’t think that those who control it would contest a governing body at every angle or control who runs it and how it’s run.
