Does anyone know about tefl? How much study do you have to do to become qualified. There are some weekend courses but I can't seem to find out if you need to do a certain amount of study hours to qualify.

According to this site you can study full time or part time.

Full time may be as little as four or five weeks.

Tefl courses are usually 4 weeks long - intensive and the provider will usually have classes for you to practice on. The 4 weeks can be very stressful but you make wonderful friends with others on the course. It's also a good oppotunity to go abroad and do it and find work (if that's an option).

These days, although there are tefl jobs about, they are not greatly paid and becoming fewer outside of the peak summer months, when teenagers from around europe come over to study. Because many foreign people were using student visas to come and study but not attending classes, the home office closed a lot of private language colleges down. There are still reputable places but this varies depending on where you live.

If you want to teach English as a foreign language then you could also think about doing the city and guilds 7407 course. This course is in stages and you have to do a minimum of 12 hours teaching in the first 12 week stage. The college can help arrange this but look around. This course has the benefit of being recognised by FE colleges and then you can teach ESOL which is the same but for refugees, people sttling in England etc as opposed to private paying students. ESOL is also a more secure job with more career progression oppotunities.

Tefl is a good way to earn extra cash in summer or as evening work as many places have classes that run from 6-9pm that daytime teachers don't want to do.
