Can someone please help me with parsing 53a "South of Cameroon, an African country (5)". I have S - D - N so assuming those are correct I suppose it's "Sudan". But why? Thanks.

It was partly under French rule at one time so i think some places/regions have French names

Sud is south in French what they speak in Cameroon. Add your an to get African country.
