...arising from a slight altercations I have had with a lady. Why do some women strongly object to being addressed as 'Madam' when all men seem to be content with being addressed as 'Sir'?

Officers in the Forces are addressed as 'sir', as are male teachers by their pupils. I've been a 'sir' most of my working life, never taken objection to the appellation.
Ah, cervine rather than corvine.
Or was that Corbyn?
