Shrink-Wrapped Swedes At Morrison's

I am several days into a conversation with Morrison's supermarkets about this. They are a good supermarket, local meat etc.. BUT I wanted to make a stew the other week and needed a swede. Fine, there were lots of them to choose from. All shrink-wrapped in plastic with a price label. I thought 'WHY'?

So I bought it and went to customer services and asked 'Why?' Does anyone not peel a swede? They are not exactly delicate and, in fact, will rot if kept wrapped in plastic.

The lady did not know, but agreed, and I left feedback. I received a very nice letter today about all Morrison's are doing, which said they minimised wrapping. So I rang the phone number and asked for the lady concerned. A pleasant conversation later I am assured that there is a board meeting next week on this subject. Please, if anyone feels like buying a swede will you add your voice? I was also assured that I could take my own containers for fish, deli stuff etc. and on top of that I could divest all extraneous packaging and leave it with the cashier who would recycle it. Thought I would let you know. Bit long, sorry. Thanks.

I've decide to take a pair of scissors with me pasta. :o) It's all quite exhilarating really. My daughters and others are all going to buy swedes and then complain about the wrapping! Maybe, just maybe, a tiny something can be done. :)
cucumbers in shrink wrap...WHY ?? GGGGRRR
Shop at sainsburys, their swedes aren't wrapped.

Sainsbury's is an extra 2 miles through a bottle-neck of traffic on its way into Scarborough, probably about another 10 mins. with accompanying car emissions. Glad to know that they don't shrink-wrap swedes though. :)
//Does anyone not peel a swede? \\

Actually, yes.

If you want a whole swede that's great, JD. Thanks for the tip though -if I ever have a family swarming around and need a lot of swede I'll give it a go. Mostly, however.........
You scoop the flesh out of a singing swede.
...colloquially known as an ABBA, geddit?
Yup :-)

My head is starting to hurt! :) xx
Surely the best solution is to buy your veg in the local market where they're not shrink-wrapped. Leaving supermarket packaging at the checkout doesn't actually confront the problem of plastic use.

There isn't really a local market here. We're quite rural. If they have it, I buy my veg from a local greengrocer(4 miles away) but they are 'iffy' in providing my requirements. I check there before I go to a supermarket.
Completely agree jourdain. Greengrocers and farmers shops don’t wrap swede in plastic so why do supermarkets??
