I have PLI-HTER, so it's obviously PLIGHTER with the second part of the clue as definition. But I don't get the first part at all! Any ideas?

A member of Plaid Cymru could be known (very cryptically) as a Plaider.

It may be a reference to the soft mutation in Welsh but (a) the mutation is from P to B not the other way round and (b) it only applies to Welsh words, which BLIGHTER is not.

Maybe the compiler thought the Welsh B changed to P instead of other way round. Interesting to find out.

If you have 'loopy for 1 across I think it might be 'looby' (Scottish) which gives you 'blighter' for 3 d. I might be completely wrong, of course .....
