8d One to light up public school where laughter has been banished (4)
W - C -, so presumably WICK. If Hawick is a public school then HAWICK minus HA would work, but is it? Or is there another explanation?

Hawick is more an independent School than Public School, but I'm sure that WICK is the correct answer.

Note in passing that HAWICK is pronounced "Hoyk"
I went for Wick for the reason you give ie Hawick without the HA (laughter). I am sure that is what the setter had in mind. K

Thanks guys. I can't even see the word Hawick without hearing the voice of Bill McLaren in my head.
There is a public school called Giggleswick - that was our reasoning (giggles) wick. And then wick for lighting up.
I'm with Muriel on this one
Muriel's obviously right....but I'm afraid I was trying to make sense out of Hawick too

Thanks Muriel, that's much better. It seems your explanation will have given quite a few of us peace of mind!
