Anyone watching this drama? I'm not a keen follower of period drama but Jessie Buckley is in it and she's so ordinary I like her, (A Kerry woman) she was on Irish tv interview the other night and she had the audience in an uproar of laughter as the host mentioned how all the wild curls had disappeared and she so sleek now, she replied something like, there;s a few curly hairs somewhere, this reminded me of a post with nailit earlier - I am persevering with the drama though

She was really pretty when she had curly hair. Now she looks a tad butch, not suited to wearing dresses. An unlikely leading lady....yet likeable

I have to agree with you with wearing the dresses, not sure about butch, she wasn't wearing a dress on local tv but ever so funny and laughed about her new look and straight hair, even embarrassed her sisters
I was watching the series tonight, it still does nothing to scare me or whatever it's supposed to do

She’s done incredibly well to go from reality TV contestant - particularly within musical theatre - to being a leading lady in serious dramas on BBC1. Dating James Norton didnt do her any harm

And, surprising for today’s top young female stars, Jessie is yet to get her kit off on-screen or in men’s mags. At least I think that’s the case. She’s quite a classy actress

She has done well and didn't half name drop when she was being interviewed but she o so lovely, I never seen the 1988 version either but wondered was it the same, I don't think i could watch weeks of it

It is slow isn't it, I just want to persevere and think, I watched a period drama, yet I watched her interview hoping she'd give something away, so I wouldn't have to watch for weeks on end :)

The novel is a thousand times more exciting. Involving as it does, murder, death, destruction, corruption, sex slaves, false imprisonment, double deals, unrequited love in the strangest quarters, and a bitter pill ending. (And we think our age is modern - this was written in 1861). It is by Wilkie Collins who wrote the Moonstone. This TV adaptation is turgid. Viewers don't get that the whole narrative is actually a 'case study' note of a 'cold case' being pressed by Walter. Buy the book! Library the book! Borrow or download the book!

Don’t know what to make of Miss Buckley. Slightly odd and blokey in appearance, she’s even got a manly walk, yet she’s also somehow sexy. I find her acting a little hammy, but then this whole series is rather hammy. In real life her Irish accent is so strong it must be very hard for her to suppress it when playing in other accents, especially English.

I couldn't help wondering how long it took them to shoot 5 hours of this tediousness.

A few years ago there was a duff LLoyd Webber musical (aren't they all?) that didn't last long, with the Count Fosco character in a ridiculous fat suit.

I caught a bit of an interview with the actors who played 'the woman in white' and the artist - sorry, can't remember their names nor the characters - they said this series starts off half way through the book.

I'm sticking with it although not all dramas are as good as the actual book :-)

Responding to Dancetotrance's post: I reread this book only two weeks before this programme appeared (I didn't know it was to be broadcast). The book is excellent although incredibly melodramatic and very typical of its era but without exception this dramatisation is so badly cast; Charles Dance, Laura, Fosco and Glyde in particular. Anyone else agree?

I have read the book and loved it. I watched the first episode and found it very tedious. I shall not be watching any more of it.
