Leave them to dry completely. They probably just smell of dampness.
There is a carpet foam I think it’s called 1001 carpet foam you just spray and leave the foam disappears and leaves a lovely scent
1001 has been going for years, my mum used it. Perfectly good. Tilly's probably got the right answer. sprays etc. should only be used if you are not asthmatic and have no-one who is in the house for about a week. (Personal experience)
Tilly's right. Just open the windows until they completely dry out.
I’ve had good results with sprinkling carpets with baking soda, and then vacuuming it up.
I use Zybax in a carpet shampooer to remove smells and it works great. If the rugs are clean then you can dilute it and spray it on.
I support the suggestion that the carpets are still damp - it is also possible that they are not yet completely clean in which case they will be more likely to smell while not totally dry (do you have an animal ?). Adding an industrial perfume ("freshening scent") is not something I would recommend.
I WOULD CALL A SPECIALIST WHO KNOW WHAT TO USE ON ALL TYPES OF CARPET. IT MAY COST A LITTLE,BUT THE SMELL WILL BE GONE.
