If the hose has split, it has done so for a reason .. usually they have perished. The sensible solution would be to replace it.
Or if replacing it is a problem you would cut the split section off and shorten the hose a bit, before re-attaching the connectors.
A decent roll of duck tape will cost you at least a fiver...
At this point you would be half way to buying a new hose .. and no you dont need a plumber .. you just need a handyman with a pair of pipe grips.
If you do go down the duck tape route you will find that if you attach a spray head, the mains pressure will just blow the tape and still leak.
