What is it with men in soaps that they have to mumble everything in a gruff voice?

We had the trio of hoarse whisperers in EastEnders years ago - Bepe, Phil and Frank, and now it seems to be spreading.

People don't talk like that except on soaps - is there a reason why producers think this is how mane actually sound?
